This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide a first aid response to a casualty in a remote or isolated site over an extended period of time until medical assistance is provided, or evacuation occurs.

This unit applies to any site where medical assistance is likely to be delayed.

First aid is to be provided in line with guidelines determined by the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) and other Australian national peak clinical bodies.

Specific licensing/regulatory requirements relating to this competency, including requirements for refresher training should be obtained from the relevant national/state/territory Work Health and Safety Regulatory Authorities.

Description

HLTAID013 Provide First Aid in remote or isolated site is an essential unit for anyone working in a first aid capacity in remote areas or sites, including first aiders, health and safety personnel, supervisors and leaders. It applies to a range of industries include mining, construction, forestry, agriculture, marine, tourism, transport and logistics and more. This engaging and interesting unit of competency covers all key areas HLTAID011 – Provide First Aid and contextualises them to be applicable to remote and isolated sites and areas. This unit covers preparation for remote area first aid, selection and maintenance of equipment, consideration of factors that impact on first aid provision in various environments such as alpine, desert, marine, rural or remote settings and tropical areas. This unit also covers the use of basic triage processes, man-made and natural resources to supplement first aid equipment, remote area medication boxes and preparation for evacuation of casualties via vehicle or aircraft.
